EMPLOYERS are queuing up to pledge their support for a campaign designed to generate meaningful careers for young people and jobseekers.

The National Apprenticeship Service, backed by the Oxford Mail, is hoping to recruit 100 apprentices in 100 days, across the county. And it is already three-quarters of the way to its target since launching the initiative on February 15.

Already 75 new places have been secured since the start of the campaign, with five apprentices starting their new jobs in roles ranging from catering to traditional crafts.

One employer to have signed up to the campaign is Abingdon-based Asnew Upholstery.

Aidan Hutchinson, 17, has been working at the factory for two weeks and is delighted to have found work. He said: “It has been a really good experience and I am learning a lot.”

Aidan has already been involved in a range of activities, including foam filling and framing of sofas and chairs.

And the former Fitzharrys School pupil is delighted to have put his first foot on the career ladder. He added: “Training on the job is great; it is a lot better than sitting in a classroom.”

Asnew director Gary Morley said: “Over the past seven years we have employed several young apprentices who have grown with us, and contribute tremendously to our success.

“I feel passionate about the trade and the need for it to continue in the future. The only way for this to happen is to invest in young people.”

The search is continuing to encourage more employers to sign up to the 100 in 100 campaign, with county employers from all sections of the business community being urged to get involved.

Apprentices train for NVQs and can pursue their studies to degree level if required.
