If you’ve ever wondered what you can do to help those affected by crime, and their families and wished you could help, then this is your opportunity to do so. National charity Victim Support gives free and confidential help across England and Wales, to victims of crime, witnesses, their family and friends and anyone else affected. It also acts as the national voice for victims and witnesses and campaigns for change.

Due to heavy demand the charity is embarking on a local volunteer recruitment drive as it relies heavily on their work, with volunteers outnumbering staff by nearly four to one. There are two main volunteering opportunities available.

The first option is to work with victims in your community; you will be able to work with victims from the start until they feel strong enough to move forward on their own. You will listen to their concerns and needs and potentially liaise with other agencies to make sure their needs are met.

This could be a great opportunity to enrich your life and help others.

A current volunteer said: “Being a volunteer at Victim Support has given me so much — I have met lots of new people, learned new skills and gained confidence. It’s a big part of my life.”

The second option is to provide support to witnesses at court. For many going to court can be a daunting and scary experience. You will able to provide them with a friendly face, support and information during a trial.

A volunteer supporting witnesses said: “Some of the people I work with have often been through very traumatic experiences.

“To be able to help them to give their evidence in a criminal trial, overcoming their fears and worries, is a reward in itself.”

For both opportunities with Victim Support, you will not only have the chance to meet and help people from all walks of life, but you will receive adequate training, regular support and supervision your expenses refunded and a chance to open new career opportunities.

Joining Victim Support is a real opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives and help communities recover from crime.
