THE WIDOW of a university lecturer celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends, and a pub lunch.

Former teacher Mary Loukes marked the milestone at the Plough Inn, in Wolvercote, yesterday.

She is pictured with her sons Christopher, 70, and Anthony, 72, and daughter Mary Waters, 67.

She was joined by about 50 relatives and friends and her great-grandchildren helped to blow out the 100 candles on her cake.

She said: “It was lovely to have my family around to celebrate.”

When asked what the secret to her longevity, she said: “How should I know?”

Mrs Loukes moved to the city with her husband Harold in 1949 after he was appointed to a job teaching education at Oxford University.

Anthony Loukes said: “It was absolutely fantastic having all the family together. My mother was a little bit dazed but she was very pleased to have everyone around her.”

Mrs Loukes has lived at Fairfield Residential Home in Banbury Road, Oxford, for more than 10 years.
