Sir – On the announcement that the repatriation of service personnel would not be following a route through the middle of Carterton, I cannot understand the anger the town feels that it will be unable to ‘show their respect’ during the procession.

Why do the public feel this necessity to demonstrate such an outpouring of public grief to someone they don’t even know.

Yes, it is right service personnel should receive the honour they deserve and I think everyone understands what a courageous job they do, but is it right that a ‘circus’ crowd should intrude on the very private grief of their families who probably want their loved ones to be taken by the quickest route possible to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Why does Carterton think they have to carry on what Wootton Bassett started. I believe a memorial garden will be created where the public can go if they feel they want to ‘pay their respects’ which is a far more appropriate way to show appreciation.
