Sir – There cannot be another city in the country doing more to tackle climate change than Oxford.

The city council alone has cut its own carbon footprint by as much as a quarter in the last three years.

Things like smart meters, covers on swimming pools and energy-saving lights have saved taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds And we will go shrinking our footprint by selling unused office space and and training our drivers in fuel-saving techniques.

Low Carbon Oxford, which includes the two universities and the BMW car plant, now covers about 40 per cent of Oxford’s carbon footprint. The city and county councils, the bus companies and many more have pledged to reduce their carbon emissions by at least three per cent every single year. Local residents too are redoubling their efforts to insulate their homes and take advantage of the feed-in tariff with solar panels. University departments are doing ground-breaking research into climate change of worldwide significance.

We should be very proud of Oxford’s climate change achievements. It gives us all hope that if Oxford can do so can other towns and cities around the world. No issue is more vital for our children and grandchildren.
