I RECENTLY attended the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre for a total hip replacement under the care of Mr Duncan Whitwell’s team.

In this day and age, we read much about the failings of the NHS and I would therefore like to take this opportunity to restore some balance to such horror stories and to report on a local part of this institution which has provided the highest level of treatment and care in respect of my operation.

Medical, nursing and support staff were all truly outstanding, from excellent surgeons, to kindly theatre staff that take great care to minimise fears and anxieties, to wonderful caring nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and last, but not least, the support staff who, whether cleaning, providing tea and coffee or meals (or fulfilling any of myriad other jobs) were most attentive, thorough and very friendly towards patients.

Jan Fowler, the chief executive, and Duncan Whitwell should take great pride in the teams that they lead, as good treatment in any hospital is a team effort, as epitomised by this exceptional unit at the NOC.

Excellence abounds within the NHS at the NOC.

The citizens of Oxford and Oxfordshire should be proud of this constituent part of the NHS which provides such a magnificent service to one and all. Thank you to all at the NOC for a wonderful experience.
