A SECOND man has been charged with murdering Denis Witney on the same day a 29-year-old was told he would stand trial in April over the death.

Wayne Cattell, 36, of no fixed address, was yesterday charged by detectives following the death of the 39-year-old on November 9.

Mr Witney was found injured by a police officer in St Clement’s Street just before 9pm and died later at John Radcliffe Hospital.

He was formally identified yesterday, but the cause of his death is not yet known and further forensic tests are now being carried out to discover how he died.

Today Cattell will appear at Oxford Magistrates’ Court as the second person charged with murder over Mr Witney’s death. Yesterday Daniel McCollin, of Blay Close, Blackbird Leys, appeared before Oxford Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.

The 29-year-old, who spoke only to confirm his name, was remanded in custody by Judge Anthony King ahead of a further appearance on February 3.

A woman had to be ejected from the court after shouting at McCollin.

A provisional trial date of April 16 was set. Two 28-year-old women, believed to be twins, who were also arrested over Mr Witney’s death, have been bailed until the new year pending further enquiries.
