A new era for Oxford’s Old Fire Station was kicked off — the metaphor is appropriate — by the young stage wannabees of Dream Studios Youth Theatre with Playing Fields and 5-inch Heels. The focus of this enjoyable feelgood show was the world of women’s football — for which in this case read girls’.

Written and directed by the group’s leader Mandy Constance, the play-with-music was clearly tailored to match the strengths of the youngsters involved, who ranged in age from eight to 15.

There were 24 performers in all — including a football team’s worth of girls and slightly fewer in the boys’ side. The latter’s leading light, heartthrob Jason McAndrew (Ben Copelin), supplied the inspiration for some of his female admirers to take up the game.

A quartet of mates played by Megan Feast, Fern Hinton, Chloe Constance and Frankie Lovell were the principal characters in the drama. Team captain Alison (Olivia Fletcher) and manager John (Conor Shaw) naturally had important roles, too, as we followed West Town Wanderers toward their eventual cup success.

Music, both live and recorded, was prominent in the show, which occupied much of the performance space in the newly configured theatre, with the audience ranged on three sides. There was a deal of comedy as well, most of it supplied by a group of male-chauvinist supporters and the trio of experts (Matthew Marias, Jack Pickering and Jacob Pickering) in the BBC commentary box.
