IT WAS a send-off like no other.

On Friday, Bob Markham, of Charlton-on-Otmoor, was carried off for the final time in a fitting manner.

The body of the well-known steam engine expert, who died at the age of 90 on Monday, October 31, was taken from St Mary’s Church to its final resting place on a vintage tractor.

His coffin was pulled by an International Titan tractor, which dated back to the 1920s and was owned by him.

Nigel Lambert, who knew him, said: “It is what he would have wanted. He was a real character and was well known in the world of steam enthusiasts.”

Mr Markham’s expertise stemmed from his family’s farming history. His father Bert operated a threshing machine and Mr Markham worked with him. He was born in Charlton-on-Otmoor and married Patricia in 1951 and had three sons, Kelvin, Adrian and Melvin.
