OXFORD’S new £2.1m community sports arena has been given the seal of approval by Sport England.

The new facilities at Oxford City Football Club have been awarded the London 2012 Inspire mark after receiving funding through Sport England’s Olympic legacy programme.

Sport England chairman Richard Lewis said: “The Inspire mark will be a permanent celebration of the link to the Games for all those using this facility.

“The Community Arena will offer high-quality sporting opportunities that will encourage people to get involved and crucially to keep on playing sport regularly.”

The Marsh Lane arena, which boasts international standard football and netball facilities, was given £350,000 by Sport England.

Through the Iconic Facilities fund it supports facilities which help increase participation and deliver a sustainable sporting legacy beyond London 2012.

Colin Taylor, voluntary managing director at the football club, said: “The Community Arena’s purpose is to provide quality affordable sporting facilities for the local community and we’re delighted that the Inspire mark recognises that.”

The arena will consist of a third generation full-size artificial floodlit football pitch, six floodlit netball courts, a new pavilion with six dressing rooms, a physio room and lounge area, and improved parking facilities.
