MOST of the 120 soldiers returning to Dalton Barracks from Germany will be living at the Abingdon base by spring next year.

Yesterday, the Oxford Mail reported there was not enough room to give members of 43 Close Support Squadron homes at the base when they return in January.

About 80 single soldiers will be housed in Bicester and those with families will live almost 40 miles away in Arborfield, near Reading.

But Lt Col Andy Moffat, commanding officer of 12 Logistic Support Regiment (LSR), said he expected the single soldiers to move to Dalton Barracks soon.

The Ministry of Defence is to build 150 new rooms at the base and spaces will also become available when squadrons move to Afghanistan.

He said: “It is an unfortunate consequence of there being limited housing available here at the moment, but over time we are hoping the situation will ease.”

More accommodation will also be available when soldiers move to other Royal Logistic Corps bases across the country.

He said the families were likely to stay at Arborfield.
