COMPUTER users will be able to access free wireless internet in Wantage town centre from next month.

The scheme means shoppers, workers, and visitors can check emails and browse the internet anywhere in the Market Place.

It is hoped the service will encourage people to stay in the town and use it more often.

And if the pilot is successful it could be brought to other towns in the district.

The free wi-fi, which will not require users to enter any login details, will be launched on Saturday, December 10.

The scheme is being provided by Vale of White Horse District Council and service provider CTS Group (Communications Technology Support). The cost will be offset with the sale of advertising space on the homepage to local businesses.

Elaine Ware, cabinet member for economic development, said: “We hope that people will make the most of the new service and use it to find out more about the local area, and that local businesses will take up the opportunity to promote themselves on it.”

CTS Group will provide technical expertise, installation and support services.

Managing director Steve Lambourne said: “Residents, businesses and visitors to Wantage will all benefit.”

From Friday, December 9, shoppers will also get two hours free parking in the town.

Linda Hatter, chairman of Wantage Chamber of Commerce, said the free internet connection was another reason the town was becoming more attractive to visitors.

She said: “All the things that are happening in Wantage all will contribute to the mood in the town. The town is becoming more vibrant. Everything is moving, and moving in the right direction.”

Wallingford became the first Oxfordshire town to install a free wi-fi connection in September last year.
