A MAN known as “Scabby John” rode around a park on a mobility scooter with his genitals exposed to children, a court has heard.

Disabled John Devine denies one count of exposure and is standing trial at Oxford Crown Court.

The 58-year-old is alleged to have ridden around the green in Marlborough Gardens, Faringdon, with his trousers and underwear around his ankles.

Two boys, aged nine and 11, told the trial they saw Devine, of Coxwell Road in the town, commit the act on March 27. The elder child told the court: “This man called Scabby John, he pulled his trousers down to his knees and his boxers down to his knees and showed us his privates.

“Then he went and came back, then he went again.

“Then later in the day we were walking back to my house and we saw him down town waiting in the boys’ toilets and he looked at us and we ran and he scootered towards us, but we went off.”

The defendant yesterday told jurors he was at home all day and that both his scooters were broken at the time.

Asked by his barrister Alistair Grainger where he was at the time of the alleged incident, he replied: “Either sitting on my bed or lying on it.”

In cross-examination from prosecutor Matthew Corrie, Devine said he thought exposure to children was “bloody disgusting”, adding: “If I saw anybody doing it on my scooter I would run them over.”

The jury is expected to return its verdict today.
