A WOMAN who came home to find builders had left her toilet dumped in her kitchen said she was charged more than £6,000 for an unfinished bathroom.

Jane Thomas gave evidence on day three of the “rogue trader” trial against Trevor Bateman, David Merriman and former Premier League footballer Phil King at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The Wallingford resident, who was 68 when she enlisted the services of Bateman in 2009, said she was left “very miserable” after a quote of about £3,500 to spruce up her garden and renovate her bathroom turned into a bill in excess of £6,800.

She told jurors workmen arrived to tend to her garden on June 22 but had not finished the bathroom a month later.

She said: “As I was paying for the work being done by the day I was beginning to get really worried about the drain on my resources.”

The jury heard that on July 21 she came home to find her toilet in her kitchen, with a note reading: “Cannot fit toilet until tiles are dry tomorrow. Sorry.”

Miss Thomas said she called Bateman who did return at 7.30pm to reinstate the toilet.

After she went to Oxfordshire Trading Standards, Miss Thomas said the builders left.

The men deny the charges.
