SHAKESPEAREAN actors have had to master the Bard’s verse in Urdu for a production of The Taming of the Shrew in Oxford.

Tonight and tomorrow, Pakistan’s Theatre Walley company, which will also perform at the Globe Theatre in London later this week, is bringing its version of the Elizabethan comedy to the North Wall Arts Centre, in South Parade, Summertown.

Set in the Pakistani city of Lahore, the production features traditional Punjabi dancing and music.

Stage and screen actress Nadia Jamil, centre, stars in the production, which is directed by Haissam Husain.

The production forms part of the Globe to Globe Festival, where companies from 37 countries will each perform one of Shakespeare’s 37 plays in 37 different languages.

Mr Husain said: “The play incorporates the cultural elements of Pakistan with a dash of humour.

“The prestige of playing at the Globe is highly inspiring and I can’t wait to show England and the rest of the world what brilliant talent we get to work with in Pakistan."
