OXFORD is a cycling city by reputation but we don’t half make it hard for our two-wheeled cousins in some areas.

If you doubt that, dust down your bike, steel yourself and take a ride under the Botley Road rail bridge. And don’t forget your helmet.

That is why the unveiling of £800,000-worth of cycling improvements is so welcome.

There is no point having some decent cycling facilities and lanes and then pitching people into hazardous situations, often on the same journey.

If motorists were expected to drive on roads of an equivalent safety standard, there would be hell to pay.

Councillor Colin Cook is correct that improving the cycle network should benefit all road users and pedestrians.

Let’s face it, there is a hardcore of cyclists who are actually a menace to themselves and others with their aggressive riding.

Part of that mindset is fuelled by the infrastructure they have to ride on, so it would be welcome to see an improvement in cyclist behaviour as a result.
