THERE was excitement in Kennington this week as a giant hot air balloon landed in a school field.

The Virgin balloon landed in the grounds of St Swithun’s Primary School at about 8.30pm on Tuesday, to the surprise of neighbours.

The landing was snapped by local resident John Saunders, who said: “We saw the balloon getting closer and it went over the gardens.”

Virgin spokesman Alex Ferguson said: “One of our Virgin balloons took off from the centre of Oxford at around 7.15pm with 16 passengers on board.

“After a lovely hour’s flight in perfect conditions, the highly-experienced pilot performed a gentle landing in the field at St Swithun’s School.

“Balloons do not land in designated places as they travel on the wind, so pilots select safe open spaces such as this.”
