The mayor of Oxford, Councillor A B Brown, escorts Coronation Queen Margaret Dykes across the Morris Motors ground at the start of Cowley’s Coronation celebrations in June 1953. Oxford MP Lawrence Turner crowned Miss Dykes, referring to her as Queen Margaret I of Cowley.
The middle picture shows Joan Green, 12, being crowned Coronation Queen in Bridport Street, St Ebbe’s. A planned street party for 47 children had to be moved indoors, into two rooms at Arthur Whitlock’s house at 20b, because of bad weather.
In the bottom picture, the mayor and mayoress are seen cutting the cake at a street party for children in St John Street and Beaumont Buildings.
