Sir – This morning I leant out of the window to hear the sound of bells ringing in the Olympic Games and heard only the roar of traffic from Thames Street.
The last two weekends we have been woken to the sound of youths in unsilenced cars using central Oxford as a racetrack.
As the roar of their engines fades, the Hercules aircraft bank over West Oxford on their approach into Brize Norton.
My heartfelt sympathy to the residents of Black Bourton. Was there an impact assessment done on the closure of RAF Lyneham and their transfer to Brize Norton?
When I rang the Base I was told that the Hercules aircraft would soon be replaced with even noisier new planes.
They fly 24/7 to achieve their required training targets. I felt as though a high-speed rail-link had been built over my house with no consultation at all. We shouldn’t we allow low-cost housing to be built beside major roads, railways or under flight paths.
If wealthy people can’t live with noise how can poor people? Put the ring-road in a tunnel (Letters, July 26) and make all the inner Oxford roads ‘urban boulevards/home zones’ as Jack Straws’ Lane is not the only road with a problem.
Make the Government responsible for its actions in centralising airbases and fund the noise insulation required to all those houses under this new flight path. To whinge about funding is not an option — it’s a part of the cost.
