Sir – I read your article concerning the proposed ‘hamburger’ roundabout on the southern bypass at Kennington with great interest.

I was particularly interested in Rodney Rose’s comments that: ‘Many of the drivers who use these roundabouts tell us all they don’t wait for anywhere near as long as they used to’.

These comments make it appear that the council is relying upon selective anecdote to back up its arguably brainless re-working of roundabouts and the seemingly never-ending increasing number of traffic lights that go with them.

I wonder if Rodney has any actual traffic data or evidence of any kind to back up his brave assertions?

As a resident of Oxford and a regular user of these roundabouts, I have seen little or no improvement in the traffic at these roundabouts since their ‘reform’. In particular the backing up of traffic from the Heyford Hill roundabout is still terrible at busy times of day.

Also the increase in traffic lights has meant that drivers now routinely have to needlessly wait at these roundabouts at off- peak hours.

I suspect I am not alone in my suspicion that the council’s roundabout reform has been somewhat botched. I suspect the Kennington roundabout will be more of the same poorly researched digging with a few traffic lights thrown in.

It amazes me on a daily basis that in this modern day and age, in which technology continues to advance at such a pace, that the council cannot use such a thing as intelligent traffic lights that could adapt to the flow of traffic across a particular section of road.
