The headteacher at Marston Primary School states “New Marston has two halls” (Oxford Mail, July 31).

This is not a truthful or accurate statement.

The school skyline shows that there were two halls. There is now only one assembly hall, as the other hall, the sports hall, is being taken away to accommodate two classrooms.

In the assembly hall the wonderful stage has been removed to help accommodate storage of large PE equipment.

The dining area was created by converting classrooms to allow the children’s centre to be housed at the end of the school.

This dining area now has to be extended to allow space for the extra intake of children to dine. By extending in this way the school loses a main entrance and cloakroom, and lunch trolley storage space.

The dining area is not a hall.

Two architects have stated that it is not suitable for sports due to ceiling height, flooring and the windows.

New Marston School is in a deprived area.

At the Wellbeing meeting held at Oxfordshire County Council ’s offices on July 26, the NHS and the council, working together, acknowledged that the children in East Oxford were a key area to focus on to increase the opportunities for health and exercise to enable their well-being.

Why weren’t different plans which kept the sports hall – also under £2m – used? There was no public consultation.

The school will double children attending and halve its indoor resources.

Oxfordshire County Council needs to provide New Marston School with a sports hall to reinstate a much-needed resource.
