WYCOMBE Wanderers have told the Football League Don't ever make us play Colchester United at the end of the season again.

Twice in the last three years Wanderers have completed their home programme with visits from United and both occasions have been marred by crowd trouble from visiting yobs.

On Saturday, mounted police had to come to the rescue of five Wanderers supporters who were attacked by a mob hurling bottles.

In the same incident, Colchester fans smashed windows at the Hour Glass pub in Chapel Lane as police held around 50 supporters from the Essex club inside the pub.

Now Wanderers who have been hit with a £7,000 bill for policing the fixture inside the stadium have told the Football League that they don't ever want to entertain Colchester at the end of the season again.

They have requested that the fixture is scheduled for a midweek date in future to cut down on the number of travelling fans.

A Blues spokesman said: "We don't ever want them here again at the end of the season. A certain section of them just come to cause trouble."

But remarkably Blues made the same request this season and it was ignored by the Football League fixture setters.

A League spokesman admitted: "We did get a request prior to the start of this season for the game to be played in midweek but it came in among a higher than normal number of requests over fixture scheduling and it made it very difficult to put the schedule together.

"As a result we were able to satisfy about 80 per cent of requests made to us but we couldn't unforunately do all of them and the Wycombe game was an example of that.

"We were unable to find a new date without repercussions on other clubs and their police forces."

But he says Wanderers new request will be treated seriously for next season.

He said: "We will look at their request again and consult with the police."

But Blues fans have not been excused of all blame.

Some were winding up Colchester fans with messages over the internet in the build-up to the game.
