A PUPIL from Oxford Spires Academy has won a prestigious poetry prize.

Jan Borysiak, 13, won third place in this year's Betjeman Poetry Prize, a competition for 10-13 year-olds led by Sir John Betjeman's granddaughter.

The national contest received more than 3,000 entries, with the winner and runners-up announced at a ceremony at St Pancras International railway station in London.

Jan's poem, entitled Poland, impressed judges Jackie Kay and Zaffar Kunial.

His secondary school in East Oxford is a proud advocate of poetry and published a book of pupils' works earlier this year.

The award ceremony took place on National Poetry Day earlier this month.
