Although Vince, Howie and ‘The Cat’ (of the Plough, Wolvercote) believe otherwise, I really don’t have anything against sides in the Premier Section.

They love their quizzing, as do the rest of us; they are just very good at it, and for talent and intelligence, I harbour no resentment.

However, there is a bit of me that can’t resist a ‘Yes! Get in there’, when one of the lesser lights steps up to the plate and knocks these elite leaguers from their lofty perch.

Earlier in the season, my lot, the North Oxford Conservative Club (Summertown), achieved such a feat when claiming the Sports Tabletop, and last Thursday, this gargantuan task was replicated as the Green Road Club (Kidlington), from the Oxford Division, in a field of 19, narrowly held off a determined challenge from Premiership runners-up, Far From The Madding Crowd ‘A’ (Oxford City), 169-167, to land the ‘Rock and Pop’ trophy.

In what turned into a mauling of the ‘Big Guns’, the White Hart (Eynsham) finished a very creditable third on 163, with the Royal Sun (Begbroke) finishing a further point behind in fourth.

Newly-crowned Premier Section champions, the Plough, had to settle for fifth, whilst their stablemates, and winners of five previous ‘Tabletops’ this season alone, the Ploughman’s Bunch!, could do no better than 14th.

With the league programme over, interest switches this Thursday to the Trophy/Supplementary Cup, and the following week to the Presentation Evening.

We will then have a gap of about three weeks before roughly half the sides from the Winter campaign pick up the cudgels to challenge for the silverware in the Summer League.

Aunt Sally otherwise occupies the attention of a handful of our teams, so we are always on the lookout to add to our numbers.

If you are considering entering a side, or perhaps, as an individual, would like to join one of the current participants, please get in touch.
