Sir – The thought of Ian Hudspeth’s county council taking over the A34 is quite chilling (Report, May 9). His Cogges Link Road calamity is not an encouraging precedent. Even more county council potholes along this main artery would be misery.

Anyone who can already avoids the A34 like the plague, especially at rush hours.

MP Nicola Blackwood’s idea of a three-lane motorway thundering past my Isis division is not at all appealing.

My own solution would be fast bus lanes in the rush hours, far more freight on the parallel railway and, frankly, encouraging fewer journeys.

More homes built in Oxford, close to where people work, could also reduce time-wasting commuting from outside the city.

The chances of the austerity-driven Tory/Lib Dem coalition putting in the necessary investment are, of course, tiny. Councillor Hudspeth would do better to repair our existing county roads before bidding for the A34.
