Sir – I refer to Mr/Ms S Kay’s letter (January 14) and would like to put forward a few other comments on this matter.

First, regarding pollution etc I feel it is a little unfair to lump all the current respiratory ills and obesity on the motorist. Modern cars for many years, have been fitted with a bit of expensive kit, which is tested annually, that cleans up car exhaust emissions.

As for obesity, I suggest the greater part of this problem lies with the current unsuitable diet and pure gluttony.

As for the quote regarding the Highway Code, with which I agree but conversely, all cyclists are legally required to stop at red traffic lights, and pedestrian crossings and have effective lights – which a fair few do not have.

Going on from cycle paths, Mr/Ms S Kay comments on the lack of finance put into the provision of cycle pathways. Well what is the point? As many cyclists will not use the existing ones.

Anyhow I suggest that it is plain good sense to use whatever safe environments are provided, whether legally obliged to or not. It is OK being in the right, but it hurts just the same from a hospital bed, whether one is in the right or the wrong.

To conclude, while I agree there are a lot of dreadful car drivers, some without very good reaction times and or poor eyesight, all I ask is that cyclists use the cycle paths that are provided, not cycle furiously where there are pedestrians around, obey the law and be considerate.
