Abbeyfield Oxford Society is a small, independent charity providing sheltered accommodation for ten individuals of senior age at Brian Lewis House near the centre of Oxford.

The philosophy of Abbeyfield is to involve local people, so the Society has a Board of voluntary trustees who live around the Oxford area.

Brian Lewis House is run by local staff and volunteers who genuinely care, and share its aim to help older people enjoy a full and purposeful life in the community.

Jim Wade, chairman of Abbeyfield Oxford Society, explained: “The Society understands how important freedom and independence is, but they are always there for reassurance and extra help if required.

"Brian Lewis House is not owned by a parent company and doesn't have shareholders — it is simply a charity that puts the needs of older people first.

“A fulfilling life is one that nourishes an individual’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. It#s these needs that guide and shape the support and care that the Society provides.

“As well as ensuring comfortable, safe and homely accommodation, the Society fosters an environment that aims to stimulate the mind, care and support the body and offer companionship for the soul.”

Abbeyfield Oxford’s sheltered housing gives older people the independence of having their own room with the security of having an alarm system and a house manager on site. The accommodation is a converted house in St Clements near local shops and other amenities and accessible by bus to Headington or the City Center so residents can get out and about.

It is one of 400 homes nationally and internationally attached to the national charity, The Abbeyfield Society, and together they are celebrating Abbeyfield Week.

The highlight of the week for the Oxford Society is a Garden Party on Saturday, June 15. There are many volunteer roles available, including befriending, IT mentoring and gardening. If you are a people person, looking to develop new friendships with residents and other like-minded volunteers, then volunteering with Abbeyfield Oxford Society could be ideal for you.

Jim said: “The Society is always looking for volunteers. No matter how much time you have, you can make a difference. You’ll be joining a team of volunteers, who give up their time and share their skills to help achieve the Society’s goals.”
