TEENAGER Cara Gainer held her nerve to win the Oxfordshire Ladies Golf Championship in testing conditions.

The 16-year-old, from Frilford Heath, won 2 & 1 against defending champion Sam Round, who was attempting to land her fourth county title.

The final, played at a damp Henley was all square through 12 holes, before Gainer took charge by winning the 13th and 14th.

Round, a former Tadmarton Heath player who had won the title in 2006, 2008 and 2012, birdied the 15th to immediately cut the deficit.

Both players parred the 16th, but Gainer hit back at the 17th with a superb approach to eight feet.

A cool two-putt was enough to take the hole and the trophy.

It completed a memorable day for the youngster, who had needed a play-off to win her semi-final in the morning.

The decisive blow was struck at the second extra hole as she saw off the challenge of the county’s second team captain Sarah Arnold, playing on her home course.

Round beat Frilford’s Annie Gowing 2 & 1.

There was an-all Henley final in the plate competition, with Karen Pollard beating Jane Atkin 5 & 3.

Clubmates also went head-to-head for the Mid-Silver Championship, with Penny Kendall beating fellow Frilford member and lady captain Sue Russell on the 19th hole.

The bronze championship final provided plenty of drama.

Lorna Godwin, from Oxford Ladies, was three up at one stage, but Studley Wood’s Wendy Smith fought back to go two up with two to play.

Godwin took the 17th and looked odds-on to force extra holes, but Smith chipped in at the last to claim the title.
