LONDON Welsh head coach Lyn Jones has urged his side to show their worth by finishing with a flourish.

The Exiles were relegated from rugby’s Aviva Premier-ship after losing 31-14 at home to Northampton at Oxford’s Kassam Stadium on Sunday.

But they would still have been in with a chance of staying up had they not been deducted five points for fielding an ineligible player.

And Jones (pictured) wants his players to show what could have been by beating London Irish this Sunday and Worcester on May 4.

“Although we have played a nice pattern of rugby looking to stay up, we need to change our emphasis and finish within five points of the team above us,” said Jones.

“We want to win more games than Worcester, who have one more win than us.

“It is about showing what could have been in this league.”

Welsh have yet to confirm whether they will stay in Oxford next season, but earlier this week chairman Bleddyn Phillips indicated they may have to return to Richmond for financial reasons.

There remains a very slight chance of a reprieve should Bedford, who will not seek promotion, win the Championship.

But even if the Exiles end up playing in the Championship back at Old Deer Park next season, Jones feels top-flight rugby has been a good thing “It has been a fantastic experience,” he said. “The sides we have played have been great.

“We have had some really good matches and through it all the players have enjoyed it. We have got nothing but positive and happy memories of this year.”

And Jones feels this season has made Welsh hungry for more.

“We have learnt so much,” he added. “The players have really started to understand and get used to the standard of play and intensity required.

“We will be really keen to bounce back up and apply the lessons we have picked up this year.”
