ALFIE Potter has one eye on upsetting Oxford United’s strikers – by finishing the season as the club’s top-scorer.

The winger took his career-best tally for the season to ten in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge, just two behind joint leaders James Constable and Tom Craddock.

But with Constable struggling to make the final two games of the season through injury and Craddock out of favour, the door is open if Potter can finish strongly.

To finish on top, the 24-year-old would need to do something he has only done once in his career, against Ebbsfleet in December 2009.

He said: “In the Conference I scored two in one game, so I’m going to need to do that to catch them.

“It's possible, I’m happy with ten, but if I can add to that I’d be delighted.”

He added: “I'm just thankful to have had a full season this time, I think being able to do that has improved me as a player and I’m taking more of my chances than ever before.

“It bodes well for the future.”

Most of Potter’s career has been spent out wide, but at times this season he has been used effectively playing more centrally just behind a striker.

The former Peterborough United trainee operated in that hole at Dagenham and could play in the same position against Rochdale tomorrow.

It is a role which allows Potter to be more involved in games, which is something he relishes.

“I like playing there, especially when we’re playing against three in midfield,” he said.

“It’s a bit difficult when the game is back and forward to start with, but when it opens up and I can get on the ball I enjoy it and I think it suits the way we play.”
