THE hopes Shipton-under-Wychwood held of reaching a fifth Lord’s final were ended by a heavy defeat yesterday.
Shipton went down by 70 runs away to Cookham Dean in the last 16 of the Davidstow Village Cup – a competition the west Oxfordshire club won in 2004 and 2005,
Cookham, who like Shipton, play in Division 2 of the Home Counties Premier League, put the game almost out of reach by smashing 271-8 from their 40 overs after being put in to bat.
The visitors paid the penalty for bowling too many wides – they accrued 31 runs to the Cookham total.
Half-centuries from skipper Ben Millar and Jake Richardson laid the platform for Cookham, but the real disaster for Shipton came in the last three overs which went for 56 runs.
The last over, bowled by Shaun Cross went for 28, including five wides.
A score of around 240 would have been gettable for Shipton on a flat pitch with a fast outfield, but a target of 272 piled the pressure on the visitors.
Shipton made a bright start with openers Andy Hemming and Craig Wood adding 60 at five-runs-per over.
But once they departed in quick succession and Steve Bates was run out going for a second run,Shipton needed a major innings to get close.
However, Charlie Miller’s 30 off 24 balls proved to be the highest score.
Shipton were eventually all out for 201 in 38.2 overs.
So they must now wait another 12 months to have a chance or returning to Lord’s.
