LUKE Garbutt was mystified as to how Oxford United only took a point from their clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

But despite the goalless draw at Adams Park, the full back believes the performance got Karl Robinson’s side back on track.

United were left to reflect on a host of chances which went begging, either through good defending or a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

It kept them second bottom in the Sky Bet League One table, but for Garbutt it was a big step in the right direction.

He said: “How we’ve not won the game is very baffling, but I think we can take plenty from it.

“Keeping a clean sheet was great, I think we had 22 chances and they had four, so on any other day we’re winning that game comfortably.

“At the moment it’s not quite going our way, but we’ve just got to keep going. It was massively positive.”

The mood would have been very different if the offside flag had not gone up in the 89th minute to rule out Adebayo Akinfenwa’s header.

Garbutt said: “For a split-second I was annoyed, but as soon as I saw the flag go up I was relieved.”

“It’s fine margins. They’re at home so will have at least one good chance, but I honestly thought we had chances to win three or four games.”

United’s best spell came in a first half which was extended to 55 minutes following a lengthy stoppage to treat Cameron Brannagan.

The midfielder landed on his neck after colliding with teammate Cameron Norman defending a corner and there was real concern he had suffered a serious injury.

United’s players had to watch Brannagan carried off to hospital, but Garbutt felt they did well to clear their minds quickly.

He said: “As a side I think we rallied and played well from that point onwards.”

“The latest on Cam is positive so the lads are really pleased.”

Brannagan, who was discharged on Saturday night, was applauded off by both sets of supporters and Robinson paid tribute to Wycombe’s role in the incident.

He said: “The people behind the scenes, the manager, their stewards and first aid team are one of the

best.

“The way they helped with Cameron Brannagan, I want to thank them personally from everyone at Oxford United.

“They were impeccable and the player’s welfare is the most important thing.”
