To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns.

1964

WITH the attack looking more polished than in their previous one goal in four game sequence, Oxford United returned to the “goal standard” with a 3-2 win over Chester in the Fourth Division.

Colin Booth brilliantly volleyed United into a deserved lead, only for the visitors to equalise a minute later.

Bill Calder restored the lead when his speculative cross flew in.

Chester hit back again, but 20 minutes from time Ron Atkinson scored a free-kick.

1984

A 1-1 draw in the Milk Cup at Blackburn Rovers extended Oxford United’s unbeaten run to 22 games.

Heading into the next game against Carlisle, they had the chance to go top of Division 2 for the first time in 14 years.

But that was not something which concerned manager Jim Smith or his players.

He said: “We don’t think about record runs here. You’ve got to lose one game eventually and I suppose if we do we’d have another target of 22 games without losing to aim for.

“Given our away record, which is probably even better than Liverpool’s, we can afford a couple of hiccups at home.”

1995

DAVID Rush took over as Oxford United’s leading scorer with a brace against Bristol City.

The 24-year-old moved up to four goals with the haul in the 3-0 victory in the Auto Windscreens Shield, one ahead of Chris Allen and Matt Murphy.

Rush said: “I was very pleased with the two goals, but I should’ve had a hat-trick.

“I definitely prefer being a central striker, I just love scoring goals. I love the glory.”
