MARK Rollins has been crowned Oxford singles champion for the first time, writes ANDY BEAL.

The Woodman player beat George A’s Kevin Stuart 2-1 at the 81st Oxford & District League finals night at Cowley Workers Club.

Rollins lost the first leg 4-3, before clinching the second 5-3 to set up a decider.

Stuart decided to set and could only muster three dolls, but Rollins struggled and needed his last stick to match his opponent.

The duo could not be separated in the three-stick shoot-out, but the Woodman member triumphed over one stick.

Liam Costar beat Masons B teammate Joe Bandrowski 2-0 to win the Ted Houghton singles title for the second time.

History was made by Black Prince’s Ian and Steve McAteer, who became the first competitors to win the parent & child and pairs finals in the same season.

The family competition went to a deciding leg against George A pair Kevin and Ashley Stuart.

Set six, Ian McAteer could only hit two, but father Steve clanged off the winning doll with his final stick.

They went on to cause an upset in the pairs final, beating Three Pigeons’ Neil Lyon and Paul Townsend – the two top Premier Section doll scorers.

After the McAteers won the opener 7-6, Ian’s six in the second leg was in vain as they lost 9-8.

But a nine in the final leg was enough to create history.
