CALUM Steer produced the stand-out performance from the senior Oxfordshire runners in the second round of the Chiltern Cross Country League at Milton Keynes.

The Abingdon AC athlete crossed the line 35th in the packed 543-strong field, swelled by competitiors taking part in the UK Athletics Challenge and a match between the RAF and Oxford University.

In soaking conditions, Steer was the quickest Division 2 finisher, while he was also the best in the under 20 category.

The only local winner came in the under 11 girls’ race, where Oxford City’s Isabella Haines-Gray took gold in 6mins 16secs for the 1.8km course.

It helped the team finish second, backed up by Emily Channon (12th) and Ella Ramsey (31st).

In the same race, Elsie Jacobs produced the pick of the performances among the 24 Bicester AC runners in action.

She finished in 6.44 to cross the line seventh out of the 82-strong field.

City’s Henry Myers was fifth in the under 11 boys’ race, while Radley’s Quinn Miell-Ingram came home in the same position for the under 13 boys.

Clubmate Louis Bushby (14.29) was the third Division 2 runner home in the under 15 boys.

Former Bicester member Ben West finished an impressive 24th for England among a 213-strong field for the under 20 race at the Cross International in Burgos, Spain.

Witney Road Runner Sam Upton had a day to remember on Saturday.

After clocking a personal best 16mins 57 secs at the Keswick parkrun in the morning, he married fellow member Jen Horsman in the afternoon.
