SIMON Eastwood was thrilled Oxford United were able to reward their travelling support with three vital points.

More than 2,000 made the trip to Coventry City, an impressing turnout considering the U’s had won just once on the road in Sky Bet League One all season.

It included a coachload of young supporters as part of the club’s Family Away Day – and the 1-0 win ensured a happy trip.

Eastwood said: “You could look at the position we’re in and you could almost say people might stay at home because it’s not been a great season, particularly away.

“People may not have expected too much so fair play to them to come in their numbers and get the win.”

It could have been a very different story if Eastwood had not been on top form in his 150th start for the club.

Although he admitted the save which deflected Amadou Bakayoko’s header to safety after it had hit the woodwork in the first half was pure luck, the goalkeeper took plenty of satisfaction from the one-handed stop to deny Luke Thomas after the break.

He said: “I can’t take any credit for the first one.

“But I was happy with the other one because it came through bodies and I saw it late.

“We rode our luck and it could have gone either way.

“You could say a draw would have been a fair result or maybe they could have won it with the way they started.

“It shocked us, they could have been 2-0 up in ten minutes, but that’s the kind of luck you need.”
