WINDSURFER Tom Squires looks on course for next year's Olympic Games after being picked in the Great Britain squad to compete at a test event in Japan.

The 25-year-old from Oxford is the only RS:X competitor selected in the 17-strong squad for the regatta at Enoshima.

While selection does not guarantee an appearance at the 2020 Games, it is an indication Squires is in contention.

“All of the chosen athletes have demonstrated medal-winning potential so far this year,” said Mark Robinson, Olympic Performance Manager at the RYA.

“We are blessed with strength and depth in many classes as the results in the recent class European Championships have proven.

"I’m delighted with the progress of the team and am looking forward to watching them perform in the Olympic waters of Enoshima in August.”

Squires was the highest-ranked Briton at April's European Championships, finishing 12th in Mallorca.

He is currently competing at the World Cup Series finals in Marseille, which will be the venue for the sailing events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
