Paul Lambert says Ipswich fans “have their club back” after third straight win, writes JIM TATUM.
The Sky Bet League One leaders dismissed Shrewsbury 3-0 at Portman Road.
Shrewbury were reduced to ten men in the first half, though Ipswich were already leading 2-0 at that point, after two goals in the opening ten minutes, first from Kayden Jackson and then a penalty from James Norwood.
Shaun Whalley was dismissed for Shrewbury Town, before Flynn Downes sealed the win for Ipswich in the second half.
Following the win, Town manager Paul Lambert said: “I like to think we've given the fans the club back and I've always said that's the most important thing. Regardless of how the team does the fans had to have their club back.
“I thought we were excellent. First half we were so dominant, even when they had 11 men.
“The team did everything I asked of them. There were some good individual performances, but as a team we're playing really well.”
The win saw Ipswich maintained their unbeaten start to season and stay top of the table.
It was a different story for fellow promotion-chasers Sunderland, who were on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line away to Peterborough.
Two strikes from Marcus Maddison, including a 30-yard free kick, either side of a Josh Knight goal helped Posh complete a stunning win.
The Black Cats endured a miserable afternoon, as they were reduced to nine men in the second half, when Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke were given their marching orders.
Sunderland boss, Jack Ross, played down the defeat after the game.
He said: “It is a strange one today because when you are on the end of that scoreline people will have a perception of how the game went - but we played OK in the first half.
“It was while we were in the ascendancy, we ended up conceding the second, then there were things which happened which made it nigh-on impossible to get something out of it.”
Following the news of a successful takeover, Bolton’s fortunes didn’t get any better on the pitch, as they were beaten 5-0 for the third game in a row.
Gillingham showed no mercy as goals from Connor Ogilvie, Brandon Hanlan, a brace from Olly Lee and an own goal from Jordan Boon gave them a comprehensive win.
