OXFORD United will tweak their game plan at Fleetwood Town tomorrow, but it is not in response to a league record which shows just one win so far this season.

In fact, head coach Karl Robinson has stressed to his players the importance of maintaining their approach.

United’s boss has taken comfort in an alternative league table based on expected goals – a figure which calculates the average return from the quality of chances created.

It shows them four points and seven places better off in the standings, the biggest gain in Sky Bet League One.

And Robinson is adamant that will become a reality if the U’s stick to their principles.

He said: “We’ve spoken about some of the things we need to do better and some things we do to continue on the right path.

“One of the continuous messages we’ve been passing on to the players is the results will come, it’s impossible for them not to – but only if you keep doing the right things.

“If you lose doubt at any stage, the results will become so unpredictable you can’t control that.”

The biggest difference between the two tables is United’s goals against column.

While they have done a decent job of limiting the opposition’s chances, only Bolton Wanderers and Southend United have conceded more often in the division.

Robinson said: “If you look at the percentage of the goals that go in compared to shots on target, it’s one of the highest in the league.

“We look at every aspect of our game, we’re very detailed in the statistical analysis but equally what the eye tells you and what we have to work on to make us better as a team.”

And when it comes to the pre-match analysis, Fleetwood look particularly dangerous opponents to United.

Joey Barton’s side raced into a 2-0 lead a Highbury last season by exploiting space on the break.

The U’s have looked susceptible from exactly that scenario this term, so while Robinson wants the visitors to retain a swagger on the ball, they have to be on their guard.

He said: “We do have an exciting element to our game and there’s a speed of the ball and a youthful enthusiasm that makes us very expansive and exciting to watch.

“But equally there will be games where we’re going to have to change that and have more discipline.

“None more so than this weekend.

“If we look at how Fleetwood scored their first and second goal against us last season, it came when we had comfortable possession and they hit us on the break.

“Their game plan worked, so we’ve got to be a bit cuter in the way we do things.

“We’re under no illusions, just because we’re playing nice football doesn’t mean you’ll win games.

“We do have to find a steeliness that makes us difficult to beat.”

He added: “We have spoken about it internally.

“These young players have to learn when there’s blood and thunder and others are losing control you have to stick to a game plan and understand how to win a game.”
