AHEAD of each of United's Sky Bet League One games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

April 20, 1968: Oxford United 1, Tranmere Rovers 0

KEN Skeen’s 85th-minute strike was enough to sink Tranmere Rovers and put Oxford United back on course for promotion from Division Three.

The midfielder’s goal transformed the mood at a tense Manor Ground, with the U’s looking doomed to a fourth straight game without a win for most of the afternoon.

Instead, the victory sent United second in the table, with just three matches of the season to play.

The crowd of 9,080 was mainly starved of good football during a frustrating 90 minutes against lowly Tranmere as several U’s stars had an off day.

Skeen and Dave Sloan stood out for the home side, but Ron Atkinson and Colin Clarke were unusually ineffective.

The visitors did not pose much of a threat to United’s goal, thanks in part to goalkeeper Jim Barron and Maurice Kyle marshalling the defence.

The U’s repeatedly tried to hurt their opponents by pumping the ball down the middle with little joy, but Skeen provided the moment of magic on an afternoon low on quality.

Graham Atkinson’s cross was awkward for the midfielder, but Skeen checked back, juggled the ball on his ankle and volleyed United towards promotion.
