Replacement Lawrie Emsworth’s last-gasp penalty earned Oxford Harlequins a 16-13 victory at Exmouth in National 3 South West.

Emsworth sealed the points with the last kick of the game from out wide after scrum half Kenny Sewell had missed a penalty four minutes beforehand.

Quins, who fielded seven changes from the previous week, felt they should have won this game more comfortably after going ahead on eight minutes.

Flanker Ryan Newman was driven over for the opening try, but slack defence allowed Exmouth full back Richard Cadywood to run through and equalise after 12 minutes.

Newman went off with a knee injury, replaced by Alan Purchase, then Sewell’s penalty made it 8-5.

Quins full back Andy Noyce was yellow-carded in the 29th minute, but his side increased their lead when flanker Tim Knapp sent centre Dominic Maley on a angled run to the line for an excellent try.

Cadywood’s penalty reduced the arrears on 51 minutes, but strong tackling from Knapp, flanker Andy Boyle and No 8 Morgan Cross kept Exmouth at bay.

The hosts scored a breakaway try through wing Tom Elliott on the hour mark, but Emsworth had the final say.

Chinnor collected their first bonus-point victory of the campaign with a 28-17 home success against Weston-Super-Mare.

They got off to a great start when influential full back Alex Wallace dotted down on three minutes after some good line-out work.

Fly half James Cathcart added a penalty soon afterwards.

Hooker Simon Tattersall had to leave the field four times with blood injuries before being replaced at half-time.

A second Cathcart penalty made it 11-0 after 24 minutes, but Weston replied immediately with full back Neil Trevenna weaving through and Harry Warman converting.

Weston lock Andrew Richards was yellow-carded on 47 minutes, but his side were next to score with flanker Dan Fry crossing over.

Two sweeping moves down the pitch, inspired by Wallace’s astute insertions into the back line, led to two tries from wing Pip Seymour.

Seymour was replaced by Eric Brown, making his long-awaited comeback, before prop Joe Pickett was driven over for his debut try.

Weston wing James Arnold finished a slick passive move to complete the scoring.
