Oxford Harlequins could not recover from a sloppy first half as they lost 41-34 at home to Coney Hill.

Quins, who have lost all three of their home games, trailed 29-10 at the break and 34-10 soon afterwards before giving themselves hope.

The hosts got off to a great start with a first-minute penalty try, converted by fly half Jeff Stewart.

Coney Hill replied with a try from scrum half James Knight and a penalty from fly half Rory Baker.

Stewart restored Quins’ lead with a penalty before tries from full back Danny Davies and flanker Andy MacRae, plus three Baker penalties made it 29-10 to Coney Hill.

It got worse for Quins when MacRae bagged his second try just after half-time.

But they “woke up” on 51 minutes when hooker James Clark drove over, Stewart converting.

Stewart’s penalty made it 34-20 on 65 minutes.

A catch-and-drive saw lock Andy Boyle go over on 70 minutes, Stewart converting.

But a minute later, Coney Hill No 8 Joe Gardiner drove over for Baker to convert.

Quins did at least secure two bonus points when three long passes found Bartholemew Hill, who beat two defenders to score, Stewart converting.

Chinnor’s unbeaten start ended with a 31-14 defeat at Barnstaple, which saw them drop from second to sixth.

Barnstaple led 6-0, thanks to penalties from Joe Weare and Josh Squire.

Chinnor had centre Trevor Powell yellow-carded before Weare and Squire struck again for 12-0.

Fly half James Cathcart slotted a penalty for Chinnor, but Barnstaple’s Mark Galliford went over, Wearne converting.

Two more Cathcart penalties reduced the arrears, but he also knocked on when about to score.

Barnstaple bagged two tries when Chinnor No 8 Harry Jackman and lock Matt Hutchings were sin-binned.

Wearne scored and converted the first, then prop Mark Berry notched the second.

Chinnor managed a late try from Jackman.
