What a memorable finish it was to United’s game against Port Vale last Saturday.

For everyone, that is, except Ben Purkiss.

The U’s right back (pictured) can’t remember a thing about it, after getting a bang on the head during the match.

“After hurting my head after about 75 minutes, I don’t remember a thing,” he said.

“I actually don’t remember a thing about the game. I came off and had to ask what the score was after about 20 minutes.

“I’ve seen the goals and the euphoria of everyone, but I don’t remember one second.

“The last thing I remember doing was putting in a cross for Simon Clist at the far post. That’s my last memory of the game, up till when I was seeing the doctor in the changing room at the end of the game.

“People tell me I was having the same conversation with him about four or five times . . . asking him how I did, what the score was, was I at fault for their goal?

“Obviously the important thing’s to win the game, but from a personal point of view, I’d love to remember it!”

It would also be interesting to know how many fans missed United’s winner – a great number headed for the exit after Vale’s equaliser!

l OXFORD United top one table across the whole of the Premier and Football League.

They have gone 36 league games since they last lost by more than one goal.

That’s now the longest run in England. The previous best, was Stevenage, who had gone 59 games without losing by more than one goal, until last weekend, when they lost 2-0 at home to Wycombe.

Oxford’s last league defeat by two goals was their 3-1 setback at Kidderminster on November 14 last year.

Even Premier League champions Chelsea have suffered the odd big defeat since that time. They lost 4-2 at home to Manchester City in February.

l UNITED’S youth team have been drawn away to Southend in the second round of the FL Youth Alliance Cup on Oct-ober 30.

Oxford were unbeaten in their first-round group.
