Adam Leach celebrated his call-up to the England Disability high performance squad by claiming six wickets in Oxford 3rd’s close-fought Cherwell League Division 5 victory over Wallingford.

In a tense affair between two of division’s strugglers, Oxford’s last pair of Calleam Biel and Mark Murfett put on 46 ,the winning run coming off the final ball of the match to seal a one-wicket win.

Teams batting first at the Hithercroft are pleased to reach three figures, so the home side’s 120-9 from 53 overs was a better score than it may seem.

Off-spinner Leach, who has an artificial lower left leg, was the pick of the visitors’ attack, his 6-34 coming off 16 overs, while Darren Grist fell one short of a deserved half-century.

Trevor Spindler was his usual miserly self after the interval, claiming his first five-wicket haul of the season to keep Oxford’s scoring rate in check.

But the wily left-arm seamer’s efforts were not quite enough to prevent Oxford clinching the narrowest of victories, and leave their hosts in real trouble at the foot of the table.

Earlier, Horspath had been struggling as the division’s leading wicket-taker Neil Smith (5-49) had them teetering on 40-5 before Jack Biggs’s 37 steered the hosts to 161.

An 183-run partnership for the second wicket between Challow & Childrey 2nd’s Justin Penrose (90) and Nigel Hill (90no) turned a tricky run chase against Thame Town 2nd into a formality.

Matthew Higgs had made 50 in Town’s 221-8, but Challow recovered from the loss of an early wicket to reach 225-2.

Shaun Burningham (61) and Simon Pritchard (44) kept Didcot in contention, but Howard Sayers (5-26) was just too good as the visitors were all out for 217.

Cropredy 2nd finally managed to avoid defeat, but never looked like winning at Brackley.

David Barnes hit 53 and David Hedger 46 in the home side’s 195-7.
