SHIPTON-UNDER-WYCHWOOD’S first match in Division 2 West saw them record a 75-run win over Falkland.
After rain washed out their intended opening game last week, Shipton were indebted to a 133-run second-wicket stand by captain Simon Hole (75) and opener Charlie Brain (60), and five wickets from Johnny Gurney (5-44) in their impressed victory.
Things started badly when Ross Barrett was bowled for one in the fourth over by Bruce Martin, who went on to claim 7-56.
However, Hole and Brain batted superbly to take Shipton to 136 before Martin dismissed Hole.
No other batsman could make double figures as Shipton’s innings closed on 185-9.
In reply, Gurney and Ryan Newhook ripped through the top order as Shipton had their opponents on the ropes at 64-8.
Although Tom Heath offered hope with 43, Shipton always looked favourites, and claimed the last wicket in the 35th over to get off the mark in style.
