TRIPLE Olympian Fran Houghton said being named in the British team for London 2012 yesterday gave her an extra boost.

The 31-year-old, from Wheatley, won silver in the women’s quadruple scull in 2004 and 2008 and has been selected again in that boat alongside Henley’s Debbie Flood.

Having first competed at the Sydney Games in 2000, Houghton is one of Britain’s most experienced rowers, but she is more enthusiastic than ever about her “home debut”

“It is really exciting,” she said. “I have been doing all the training and going on and on at all my family and friends about how amazing the Olympics are for years and years.

“I think they were a bit sceptical, saying ‘why does she keep doing this?’ “Now the Olympics are coming to them, hopefully they are going to catch a little bit of Olympic fever and realise why it is so special and so exciting.

“I really hope they experience it and see it from my eyes.”

Flood added: “To compete at London 2012 will be the greatest honour for me – it’s my home Olympics and my home crowd.”

No British women’s crew has won Olympic gold before – and the quad will be one of those hoping to change that.

Oxfordshire’s 26 athletes named yesterday include Peter and Richard Chambers, from Oxford Brookes University, who will be the first British Olympic rowing brothers since Greg and Jonny Searle in 1992.

Only seven rowers have been named in the men’s eight where Oxford University’s Constantine Louloudis is tipped to return at stroke if he can shrug off a back injury.
