THERE was another piece of history made at Eton Dorney on Wednesday when Britain's men’s quad, featuring three Leander Club members, reached their final.

Steve Rowbotham, Tom Solesbury and Matt Wells, alongside Charles Cousins, finished a highly impressive third in 6mins 5.71secs to qualify for the final.

In so so doing, they became the first British men’s quadruple sculls crew to make an Olympic final.

Solesbury said: “It was really good and I enjoyed it. We knew Croatia would be fast and Russia always start quickly, but we thought the Russians would fade in this headwind in the second half and we were ready for that.”

Britain’s men’s pair of former Shiplake College pupil Will Satch, from Henley, and George Nash also made their final after a dominant semi-final victory.

They were fourth at 500m, but steadily went through the field to win in 6.56.46.

Meanwhile, Bryony Shaw maintained her sixth position in the windsurfing event in Weymouth.

Shaw, 29, who was brought up in Oxford and learned her trade at Farmoor Reserviour, finished her two races in fourth and eighth.

Shaw claimed the bronze medal in Beijing four years ago.
