EDDIE Pepperell recorded a sensational sixth place finish at the 147th Open Championship after a superb display.

The Abingdon golfer carded the best round of the day – a four-under-par 67 at Carnoustie.

It saw him just one shot off second and three behind winner Francesco Molinari and is comfortably his highest finish in a major.

Pepperell, who began the day on one-under and in 36th place, started strongly with birdies at the third, fifth and sixth.

A dropped shot at eight halted his progress as conditions deteriorated with the wind picking up.

However, as others faltered, five pars were followed by a birdie at 14 to take Pepperell to the brink of the top ten.

He then picked up another shot on the par-four 17th.

A par at the last completed a superb performance from the Frilford Heath member.

“That was very satisfying, especially after yesterday which was a frustrating finish, dropping two shots in the last three,” he said after his round.

“I just felt like that was my chance gone, but as it transpired today was a good round in tough conditions.”
