A TRIPLE bogey at the penultimate hole cost Eddie Pepperell dear at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

The Abingdon golfer, who started on six under, shot a two-over-par 74 on Saturday to finish his first event of 2019 in a tie for 49th place.

It earned Pepperell just over €26,000 – but it could have been so much more had it not been for his nightmare on the 17th.

The Frilford Heath member bogeyed the first, tenth and 14th holes, but birdies at the seventh, eighth and 12th saw him well placed, until a seven at the par-four penultimate hole hit him hard.

Pepperell responded with a birdie at 18, but the damage had been done.
