Oxford students featured in each of the four medal-winning crews at the World University Championships in Poland, writes John Wiggins.
Great Britain crews featured in seven of the 14 A finals, with two other crews racing in B finals at Lake Malta in Poznan.
The first gold medal came for the men’s four featuring former St Edward’s School captain, Oli Knight (now at Newcastle University).
They led from the start to finish ahead of Italy and Poland.
Britain’s other gold came from the eight in the last race of the regatta.
There were Oxford Brookes men in key seats – James Stanhope at stroke, Robbie Massey at six and cox Rory Copus, who is now the recipient of two gold medals at this level.
In between, there were bronzes from the women’s pair featuring Oxford University’s Anastasia Chitty and then the four with Brookes’ Annie Withers in the No 2 seat.
Isis rower, Iain Mandale and Brookes’ Oliver Morgan were in the lightweight four that came fourth. Brookes’ Imogen Mackie was also fourth in the lightweight double B final.
l Oxford University have named Ali Williams as the successor to Christine Wilson as head coach for the Women’s Boat Race Williams was assistant coach for the 2016 race and before that had worked largely in Canada, where she was head coach at the University of Alberta.
